Final Draft of Authentic Task Speech

Hello, my name is Takecia Bright and my group and I are doing our group project on Funding Technology. What

we’re trying to do is get funds to improve our technology at West Craven High School and limit the blockage we on our

computers.

Did you know that the blockage on our school computers are affecting students learning? Or that the internet

failures are causing teachers to abort their planning process and start over?

Technology is a big part of our school and without it we fail to achieve. We don’t know what to do or where to go from

there.

We found out in the process of conducting our presentation for you that 75% out 15 classes said that technology at

our school, if improved, will help them learn more and achieve to higher greatness.

As a teacher at West Craven High School, do you want your students to have a better learning environment? Do you

want them to be confused in a lesson your teaching? Do you want reliable sources in your classroom?

To have these necessities we have to speak up, we have to be heard. If we are heard about the changes that should

be met we could change our school and even our county.

Many schools may have the same problem. With all those questions in mind. My group and I are here to tell you

valuable information on what students, parents, and our principal had to say about their technology use and possible

solutions to many of their problems.

Final Speech

Hello, my name is Jayla Crawford, and I will be discussing our group’s data on technology. We collected this data, because we saw a need for our school to have updated computer equipment. The first question we asked was; “should the school do more fundraising to help the boost technical funds?” 52% responded with yes, both students and teachers think that there should be more technology. Why? Another survey question asked; “do you think technology would help benefit your learning?” 55% said yes, because it’s much more exciting to be on a computer than reading from a big bulky textbook.

Ask yourself this; “would it be easier to access the internet if the school funded individual computers/netbooks?” 58% said yes, that a way you can access your information from anywhere when you need to. Although some of these computers are not updated like the rest. Do you think it would be easier to have better updated technology and books? 52% agree, since a lot of these computers are not up to date and are too slow. This makes it a lot harder to access certain programs. Yet do you think schools are pushing towards technology when there is little funding for it? 37% responded yes, which is not a lot of effort, but things can change.

Do you think our school should get better learning supplies? 58% said yes, because we’re running low and some of these books are worn out. “Would getting technical books instead of textbooks would help expand students knowledge?” Only 25% said it would, to make things a lot easier. Only the real question is; “are you willing to support school funding for technology, or ideas for school improvement?” 44% responded yes, which is a start that will one day lead to our schools improvement.

Based on our data collected, there will be several solutions introduced later. Now here is Hannah Peck with our group’s interviews.

Michaela's Speach

Thank You Hannah. Hello, My name is Michaela.

As you can see the idea of Funding Technology would be supported by many, and it would be helpful in today's society and schooling. Who wants to carry around a bunch of heavy books? Not me. Improved technology would be something along the lines of Nooks, Tablets and Ipads. They would be easier to keep up with, and maybe the students would pay attention and be more alert to what's going on in classes. The school will not have to buy as much paper, teachers won’t have to waste printer paper and ink on worksheets, teachers can send the work to a website like Widget and the students will be able to access the work at home, they will be using 21st Century skills and neither will parents it will be saving everybody money. We have benchmarked other schools who worked with various companies about supporting schools. We have also found various grants that would help WCHS with funding more technology. Also parents would be charged a minimal 100 to 500 dollar warranty in case anything were to happen to their child's equipment. If we talk to more schools and talk to more parents in various places and maybe even Craven County Board of Education we can push the issue further. We had an idea and so we got together and started to make a change.

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to listen to our ideas and help us facilitate change.
