Name: Tyler Lewis Date: 5/6/12 Period: 2ND Thank you Jesse! Hello, my name is Tyler Lewis, and I will be sharing the survey data portion of our Authentic Task Project with you. We surveyed a group of people on what problems are the worst and what would the most efficient solution be. Our first question we asked the students was: “On a scale from one to ten, how clean are the student bathrooms?” As you can see, the majority of the students rated the bathrooms at a level one. The reason why they rated it that low is because it smells like cigarettes and paper towels are everywhere. The next question we asked the students was: “Have you ever stepped in gum before at school?” The data showed that more than seventy-five percent of students have stepped in gum at school. The students have also got gum stuck to their clothing when they were leaning on the wall. We then asked the students if they would use hand sanitizers if they were mounted around school. As you can see more than eighty percent of the students said yes. This can help prevent spread of contagious viruses and overall sickness and keep our school clean. Another question we asked the students was: “Are more trash cans needed around school?” An abundance of student said yes, more trash cans would be great! This will help stop the the whole school leaving trash where it shouldn’t go and trashcans will be easier to excess. This shows that, many student don’t like the fact that our school isn’t clean and it can be an easy problem to fix. Cody Cooke, will now give a brief summary on the interview we conducted with Mrs. Barrow and Mr. Donald Oates.Jesse Ray 4-30-12 Authentic Task Final Draft Hello, my name is Jesse Ray, and I’m here to talk to you about the cleanliness at our school. Have you ever stepped in or bumped into gum at school? I know I have, and it’s not very fun. Are you tired of seeing our school defaced with trash when it could be so easily prevented? This is what our group is here to fix.
To start off, as a group, we have noticed many students are getting sick frequently. Could this be because of students not washing their hands in the bathrooms? I know some students who are so disgusted by the bathrooms that they don’t even go in them at all. How could they sanitize their hands without entering the bathrooms?
There are many other issues that also have to do with the overall cleanliness of our school. Who likes having trash lying around everywhere? Gum stuck to walls, bleachers, and floors doesn’t look nice either; and it does nothing to impress visitors at our school. In the gym, we have noticed there is a bunch of trash that is disregarded and just thrown under the bleachers. This is not the proper way to take care of our school.
All these problems have solutions that aren’t that difficult. We have surveyed people, interviewed people, and think we have found the best solutions to the issues we face here at West Craven High. We are here to fix these problems and make this school healthier, cleaner, and more enjoyable! Tyler Lewis is going to speak to you about the data we collected.

Authentic Task Speech – Deryn Smith! :)
Thank you for that great introduction Cody! Hello, my name is Deryn Smith and I’m here to talk about possible solutions and funding for our problem. Our group believes we can truly make a difference at West Craven High School by making it a cleaner and safer place. However, to make this happen, we will need the full support of the staff and administration at our school. Based on our survey results and interviews, here are a few ideas we came up with:
Our group thinks that putting hand sanitizer stations and more trash cans in the hallways and bathroom entrances/exits at West Craven High School would be a good idea. This would not only benefit the students, but also all faculty members and support staff. Not only would this increase the cleanliness, it is also a fairly inexpensive solution, with the hand sanitizer stations only being around thirty dollars each. Having more trash cans placed strategically around the school would decrease the amount of trash that ends up on the floors. Students are much more likely to throw their trash or gum in the proper place if there is a trashcan that can be easily accessed. We have noticed that during class changes, there are rarely any trash cans out in the halls. Because of this, students will just throw their trash on the floor or stick their gum to the walls, especially after lunch. There have even been notes posted above the water fountains stating “this is not a trashcan” because students throw their trash and gum in those too.
When we brainstormed some funding ideas, we came across a grant supported by the Clorox company that would help pay for the sanitizer stations and trashcans. Other options we decided on were doughnut sales or a car wash. We also decided to call Wal-Mart to ask them about sponsoring us, and they were willing to do that.
We hope you can truly tell how serious we are about increasing school cleanliness. I would like to thank everybody who helped us put our presentation together, especially Mrs. Blackburn and Mrs.Burch. Also thanks to everyone who came out to watch our presentation today. Does anyone have any questions they would like to ask?
Interview Speech - Cody Cooke
Thanks Tyler. My name is Cody Cooke and I’ll be talking about our groups interviews. Our group conducted two interviews to obtain extra, more specific data. The first person we interviewed was our principal, Mrs. Karen Barrow.
The next person we interviewed was Mr. Donald Oates. One of the questions we asked him was, “What do you think would help keep our school clean?” His answer was, “Students should clean up after themselves.” Another question we asked Mr. Oates was, “Do you have to clean up a lot of gum off of the floor?” His response was, “Yes!”
As you can see from the responses of Mrs. Barrow and Mr. Oates, they both agree that something needs to be done to help our school. What do you think needs to be changed? Here’s Deryn with some solutions.
