Authentic Task: Communication, What’s really Going On.
Thank you Scott for the welcome. Hi, my name is Courtney Malone and I will be sharing our solutions to our communication issues. Every school should strive for good communication to help build a strong foundation. Students and staff have proven, through survey results and interviews, they believe our communication structure is not working to its full potential. How can we fix this? Some of the things we have pulled were; to have more instant alert phone calls home, to receive more school newsletters, or to have student communicators.
One of the results from our surveys was to have more instant alert phone calls. There are some students that are not even receiving the calls. For this to work, we would have to have everyone’s current information. How would we get all of the information needed though? Send out mandatory papers every so often is one of the options. I know for one, I made sure to keep my updated information in the system, and I haven’t gotten a call all year. We are proposing this as one solution, is to look and update the system.
Another change we can make to our foundation to sturdy it, is to have more school newsletters. We go to homeroom about five times approximately all in turn only receiving about three-four school newsletters. In these papers, are you receiving all the information possible? Could we put more information than is being presented into these paper? What you are receiving is not all that is going on. We are just mentioning some of the big achievements in the paper, and things that go over the announcements. What is happening to the smaller, sometimes overlooked, details?
Our last proposal for a stronger foundation of communication is to have student communicators. Instead of having the same perfunctory announcements every day, you could have students read over the intercom. This could be a fun and lively way to grab the attention of our fellow peers. Also, having another student show their approval and excitement for it could improve student reaction. This would not be hard to execute and we think it would be a great way to share some information.
How will we fund our ideas? We know that money doesn’t grow on trees, and West Craven doesn’t have an extensive amount set aside to do things. To fund some of our ideas, we could have a bingo night with an auction, or even a cookout. We could make it where it wasn’t just school wide, but community wide. Involving as many people as possible would allow a wider range of money income.
Overall, our communication is not up to par. There are flaws that can be addressed, with funding options. We NEED to find a better way to have a stronger foundation. Through YOU, and the help of students, staff, and the community, WE CAN accomplish this. We hope you take all we have shared into consideration. Are there any questions?

Gene Elks Speech May 6, 2012
Thank you Grace.

Hello, my name is Gene Elks and I wonder: how effective is communication to students
and families at home? Well, the majority of the students we polled said that the school does communicate with the students here at school. On the other hand, would the school find that a new
electronic sign outside benefit us? Most students do not think so. Most people said they would not be
able to find the time to see the sign and read all that it had to say. Most of the polled students when asked, on a scale from one to ten, “how effective do you feel the digital sign would be in communicating events?” answered in the “worst” half of our bar graph. Something has to change to change this for the better.

From our ideas to improve communication we polled students on what they wanted as a better way of communication. Most of those votes went to a better instant alert system, but swe offered a brand new idea for our school: a school newspaper. Now our school board may have pondered this idea, but what student would want to take a class like that? Actually a lot . From our survey we found that out of 48 polled, 34 students are willing to join in and do a class like this. That’s more than half of the polled students! Also, a lot of students think that it would be a very effective way to communicate.

28 of the people polled said that having a journalism class that would provide a newsletter would be a good idea, which would help alot. Plus the students would do the class and most would read the product of the the class. Communicate better and a lot more will listen. Students would like better communication so they can make their experience here at West Craven High School the very best they can.

Now Scott (or Grace) will share our interviews and show you what the faculty thinks about communication.

Scott Mills final speech
Thank you Gene. Hello my name is Scott Mills and I will be sharing our interview data. My group conducted three interviews; the interviewees were Ms. Betsy McCandless, Mrs. Stefanie King, and Mrs. Susan Whitfield. We choses this people because, Ms.McCandless because she is the freshmen guidance counselor, Mrs. King because she is the assistant principal and she was a past English teacher, and Mrs. Whitfield because she is a business.
Here is a portion of the interview with Mrs. King. As you can see Mrs. King agrees that we need to do a better job communicating. In the interview Mrs. King mentioned our class representatives, saying they’re the ones responsible for get information to us students, and that a communication/journalism class would help if we can get people involved. Now I will play a clip of the interview with Mrs. Whitfield.
Mrs. Whitfield stated that if student would listen to announcements and go to the school website they could acquire information about clubs and other events, however she understands that announcements might not be headed in some class rooms. She mentioned if students could give announcements that might catch the attention of other student and they would most likely listen to announcements.
Ms. McCandless stated our class representatives need to communicate so they can get the information out to students. Ms.McCandless was asked if a journalism class would improve communication. Her response was “it could improve communication if we could get people involved.” Here is Courtney with fundraising tips and solutions.
